Legion of Honor Celebrates New Thiebaud Exhibit with VIP Opening Reception

On March 20 nearly 400 donors, lenders, artists and exhibition sponsors gathered at the Legion of Honor museum to honor legendary local artist Wayne Thiebaud at an elegant donor preview of Wayne Thiebaud: Art Comes from Art. At a cocktail reception in the museum’s Rodin galleries, guests enjoyed tasty bites inspired by Thiebaud’s famous cakes, pies and other culinary delights. Lucky guests used their private gallery time to explore the immersive, salon-style exhibition of Thiebaud’s copies after other artists spanning from Andrea Mantegna to Édouard Manet to Giorgio Morandi.

Also included in the exhibition are dozens of original artworks from Thiebaud’s personal collection, representing illustrious artists like Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, Henri Matisse and Richard Diebenkorn. Notable guests that night included Bernard and Barbro Osher and Matt Bult, Chairman of the Wayne Thiebaud Foundation. Approximately 65 quintessential works by Thiebaud — including paintings of people, still lives of cakes, tabletops, and other ordinary objects; cityscapes featuring soaring buildings; and mountain landscapes — offer an in-depth exploration of some of Thiebaud’s most consequential, lesser-known works. Wayne Thiebaud: Art Comes from Art is on exhibit at the Legion of Honor through August 17.
