On May 15 San Mateo County celebrated two big milestones in one festive occasion: the 169th anniversary of the county’s founding, and the historic dedication of their new civic building–now the greenest in the nation. Civic and international leaders gathered on the site at 500 County Center in Redwood City, to showcase the power of innovation, diplomacy and community in action. The 208,000-square-foot timber-and-glass landmark, already acclaimed nationally for its sustainable design, now houses several county departments and stands as a beacon of innovation and environmental leadership.
The event began with a historical re-enactment at the San Mateo County History Museum, followed by a musical procession leading the guests to 500 County Center. Upon arrival, attendees were welcomed to a dedication led by County Executive Mike Callagy, which was followed by the official ribbon cutting. The celebration continued with a live DJ, kids’ activities and a short documentary on the project’s ambitious journey from blueprint to building. The celebration reflected San Mateo’s civic pride, and positioned 500 County Center as a new gathering place for both local residents and global visitors.
