Terranea Resort, set on 102 acres along Southern California’s Palos Verdes Peninsula, has long been known for its sweeping Pacific views, refined accommodations, and deep connection to the coastal environment. Now, a $4.5 million renovation of its 50,000-square-foot oceanfront spa introduces a refreshed sense of luxury, calm, and purpose throughout the expansive wellness destination.
Led by Los Angeles-based RVD Associates, the overhaul brings a contemporary new aesthetic that mirrors the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. Soft blues, sandy neutrals, and organic textures dominate the palette, while custom light fixtures and bold contemporary art add dimension. The goal: to create a space that feels both elevated and approachable—an extension of the ocean and cliffs just beyond its doors.
The entry makes an immediate statement. A monolithic quartzite reception desk anchors the new lobby, set against the warmth of a double-sided fireplace clad in Moroccan zellige tile. Curved furnishings and subtle architectural elements set a tone of understated sophistication that carries throughout the spa.
“We are thrilled to elevate the guest experience and create a luxurious yet approachable waterfront space for our visitors.”
Ralph Grippo, president of Terranea Resort
All 25 treatment rooms have been updated with rich cherry cabinetry, Living Earth Crafts spa beds, and upgraded equipment designed to enhance the guest experience. Locker areas and bathrooms also received a full refresh, featuring modern lighting, porcelain tile, and elegant finishes that create a cohesive, elevated atmosphere.
The redesigned relaxation areas continue the indoor-outdoor flow. Co-ed lounges include color-washed murals, rattan lighting, and ergonomic Evo loungers by Gharieni with fully adjustable settings for customized comfort. New wallcoverings, furnishings, and drapery create a tranquil setting where guests can unwind before or after treatments.
The outdoor spaces remain a signature highlight, now enhanced with fresh greenery, updated patio furnishings, recanvassed cabanas, and vibrant plantings. These lush, coastal-facing spaces—complete with fire pits, hot tubs, and a private spa pool—emphasize Terranea’s unique position along the water’s edge, offering guests an immersive connection to the landscape.
The spa’s 5,000-square-foot fitness and wellness center also saw upgrades, including new state-of-the-art Precor equipment, Peloton bikes and rowers, treadmills, and strength training machines. Expansive windows bring in natural light and frame unobstructed ocean views, adding visual clarity to every workout.
As part of the renovation, the spa introduced two new signature treatments designed to balance innovation and tradition. The Harmonic Aura Awakening uses Himalayan singing bowls, marma point facial and body massage, and ayurvedic ingredients such as arnica and ashwagandha to promote holistic healing. The 60-minute experience supports energy flow and deep relaxation. The HydraFacial combines hydra-dermabrasion, a gentle peel, and antioxidant infusion to deeply cleanse and hydrate the skin, delivering noticeable radiance with no downtime.
This spa enhancement complements the resort’s broader offerings, which include a nine-hole, par-3 golf course, four swimming pools, a 140-foot waterslide, oceanfront villas, bungalows, and casitas, and a robust culinary program focused on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. The land itself is part of the experience—home to herb gardens, lemon groves, and miles of coastal trails where guests can explore sea caves, kayak, or take part in outdoor activities such as archery and falconry.
With this spa transformation, Terranea continues to respond to the growing demand for intentional, wellness-centered travel. The upgrades not only enhance comfort and design but also reaffirm the resort’s commitment to offering a meaningful connection to place—where rejuvenation feels effortless and authenticity remains at the center of the experience.
