Award-Winning Film Cup of Salvation

A Journey of Resilience and Revival

The fourth SOMM Film: “Cup of Salvation” has won the 2024 James Beard award. Cup of Salvation, directed by Jason Wise and produced by his wife, Christina Wise, is a poignant documentary that takes its audience on an emotional and cultural odyssey. The film follows Vahe and Aimee Keushguerian, a father-daughter duo, as they strive to revive the ancient grape varieties of their homeland in Armenia. This movie is not just a wine story; it’s a narrative of resilience, cultural revival, and the unyielding human spirit.

Reviving Ancient Grapes Amidst Turmoil

Set against the backdrop of the battle-scarred Caucasus Mountains and extending to the clandestine vineyards hidden within the forbidden Iranian countryside, Cup of Salvation offers a visual feast that captures the region’s raw beauty and turbulent history. The Keushguerians’ mission is to breathe life into a post-Soviet infrastructure while navigating the complexities of harvesting during conflict and marketing their unique wine globally.

The film beautifully illustrates Armenian winemaking’s deep cultural roots and historical significance. Vahe and Aimee’s passion is palpable as they work tirelessly to restore a vital part of their heritage, making the audience appreciate the profound connection between land, culture, and tradition.

The documentary does not avoid portraying the harsh realities and obstacles the Keushguerians face. From dealing with a war that threatens to stop their harvest to losing their land to the Azerbaijanis, their journey is marked by numerous challenges. Yet, their triumphs are equally highlighted, showcasing moments of success and the joy of seeing their efforts bear fruit—literally and metaphorically.

The visual storytelling is a standout feature of Cup of Salvation. The cinematography captures the essence of the region’s rugged landscapes and the intricate beauty of the vineyards, making every frame a work of art.

The film’s intimate narration, provided by the Keushguerians and their close-knit team, adds a personal touch that resonates deeply with the audience. Their heartfelt reflections and shared experiences create a compelling, educational, and emotionally engaging narrative.

Private Screening Event

An intimate private screening at Indian Springs, hosted by Pat Merchant, Suzette Clarke, Susana Kabour, and Farah Makras, with Jason and Christina Wise was an event to remember. The ambiance was charged with excitement and anticipation, bringing together an eclectic mix of wine enthusiasts, documentary lovers, and cultural explorers.

The setting provided a fitting backdrop for a film celebrating heritage and perseverance. At the end of the movie, guests had the rare opportunity to drink the most dangerously made wine in the modern world–Molana Dry Red 2021. After the showing guests were treated to an Persian feast at Pat’s private residence.

Cup of Salvation is a must-watch for anyone interested in wine, culture, and untold stories of determination. It’s more than a documentary; it’s a testament to the power of passion and the importance of preserving one’s heritage against all odds. Jason Wise has crafted an informative and moving film, making it a standout piece in cultural documentaries.

For those who cherish stories of resilience and cultural revival, Cup of Salvation offers a rich and rewarding experience.
