The Silicon Valley Urban Debate League (SVUDL), an organization that brings the sport of academic debate to under-resourced schools, hosted its annual fundraiser on September 26 at the Palo Alto Hills Golf & Country Club. Founded by a group of educators and community leaders, SVUDL helps low-income youth tap the power of their voices to compete, excel–and even change the world.
The event opened with a reception, welcoming the organization’s supporters to the scenic Country Club’s grounds. Guests had the chance to mingle, and meet some of SVUDL’s students in person to discuss the program’s impact on their lives. A three-course dinner followed, and a program in which California Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero was honored as the 2024 SVUDL Speaker of the Year. Justice Guerrero then participated in a fireside chat about her lifelong dedication to education.
Other notable attendees included State Senator Dave Cortese and Supervisor Cindy Chavez. Supervisor Chavez presented SVUDL with a commendation from the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, commemorating the organization’s 10 years of serving the community. The funds raised at the gala will ensure that SVUDL can continue to fulfill its mission to bridge the opportunity gap in under-resourced schools in San Jose and the Peninsula.
