Capturing the Creative Spirit of Allona Kagan

Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Allona Kagan, author of The Weaver, a captivating tale about memory, identity, and an extraordinary metaphysical recovery. Her writing process is as unique as her stories, offering inspiration to fellow writers and aspiring authors. Here’s what she shared about her creative journey, her methods, and the experiences that shaped her as an author.

Writing with Intuition and Meditation

Allona’s writing process begins in the most unexpected way—through what she describes as a profound moment of clarity.

“I got the idea in the middle of the night,” she recalls. “I woke up knowing the entire story. From that moment, I went into a meditative state daily and wrote. It was like the entire narrative was already there; I just had to bring it to life.”

Her approach to writing is free-flowing yet deeply intentional. Allona explained how her environment plays a critical role in nurturing creativity. Surrounded by objects imbued with spiritual meaning—crystals and figurines—her office becomes a haven for inspiration. “These items connect me to the process and give me a sense of peace and focus,” she explains.

The Instant Emergence of Plot and Characters

When asked whether plot or character comes first in her storytelling, Allona shared a fascinating insight. “For The Weaver, it all came to me at once, like a single thought holding all the details. Imagine DNA—it’s compact, yet it holds the code for an entire body. That’s how it feels. I knew the entire story before I even began to write.”

Yet while she visualizes her characters with great clarity, their evolution is dynamic. “The characters feel alive—as I write, they reveal themselves. They speak, they act, and they live out their stories in real-time. It’s like I’m witnessing their lives unfold, rather than creating them.”

Overcoming Challenges in the Writing Process

Surprisingly, Allona doesn’t see writing itself as difficult. “It all comes out naturally, not just when I’m sitting and writing but throughout the day—the book almost writes itself,” she says. However, her latest manuscript presented a new challenge as its pieces came to her out of sequence. “Writing scenes non-chronologically was a little chaotic, but piecing them together became part of the creative process.”

One of her greatest frustrations lies in the lack of objective feedback during the writing process. “I wish I had more sounding boards,” Allona admits. “When you’re immersed in your own story, it’s hard to perceive how it will resonate with others. Constructive reflection would be invaluable.”

Connecting with the Ideal Reader

For Allona, her audience is always in mind. She envisions her books as gifts to individuals who share her curiosity and reverence for metaphysical journeys. The ideal reader of The Weaver? “She’s a well-educated woman, aged 30 to 80, with an active life and spiritual curiosity,” Allona says thoughtfully.

Yet at its heart, Allona writes for herself. “I create the stories I want to read—the ones I can’t find elsewhere. I mix spirituality and adventure into narratives that carry depth yet remain enjoyable. It feels like gifting a narrative to my best friend.”

Celebrating the Writing Journey

Completing a manuscript is no small feat, and Allona allows herself moments of celebration. “I take a walk to reflect and celebrate”, she shares. Occasionally, there’s a dinner celebration with her family and close friends—a quiet acknowledgment of a significant milestone.

Becoming an Author and Beyond

Writing and publishing have profoundly transformed Allona’s self-perception. “After my second book, I could finally call myself an author. It led me to connect with a part of myself that is deeply enriching and creative. Writing has opened a whole new dimension of who I am,” she reflects.

For aspiring authors, Allona’s story is a testament to the power of trust—trust in the story, the creative process, and the unique voice within. Her organic approach, blending intuition and structure, reminds us that there’s no singular path to creativity.
